They will they permit others to do so” or “will not otherwise attempt to derive source code, trade secrets, or know-how from or to underlie any Twitter API.”
According to The Verge, the rules prohibit alternative services as well. This prohibition was reportedly included in the most recent update.
What does it mean that Twitter has introduced new rules?
On January 12, Twitter clients like Tweetbot and Twitterific stopped working because they couldn’t connect to Twitter’s API. These services are client apps provided by third parties. It will allow users to access the service and several other features while logging in with their Twitter credentials. These apps typically provide users with more features than the standard Twitter app or even Tweetdeck, which the company purchased for $40 million in 2011 and has since integrated into its platform. In contrast, now that there are new rules for the API, these services will no longer function properly because they are technically in violation of the laws.

In the meantime, developers have emphasized that they have not received a warning or any communication regarding the impending change. In a post on the Icon Factory blog, he stated: We have yet to obtain a clear explanation of why Twitter deactivated Twitterrific on January 13. For the past 16 years, we have followed their Application Programming Interface rules to the letter, as published. We have yet to determine whether or not these rules have been modified recently.
